Unions Are Destroying Jobs

There are 416,200 unemployed workers in Michigan, counting just those actively seeking work. Our 8.5% unemployment rate is the highest in the nation (the national rate is 5.7%). Since mid-2000, 400,000 jobs have been lost in Michigan, 70 percent of them in manufacturing (U. of M. News Service, 11/16/07). Politicians tell us that we need to transition from a manufacturing economy to an information technology economy. I say technology is fine - we'll take anything we can get - but I'm not ready to give up on manufacturing. Michigan is the home of the auto industry and people haven't stopped buying cars. Why are we conceding defeat? (continued....)

Seniors Enjoy a Huge Income Tax Break

The state income tax rate increased from 3.9% to 4.35% on October 1, 2007. By eliminating tax breaks enjoyed by some taxpayers, we could regain enough revenue to reduce the rate to 3.6%.

These tax breaks go mainly to seniors, and not because they need them. Maybe it's because they are reliable voters. (continued....)

The $880 Million Pension Fund Give-away

It's legal, but really bad policy. In years when investment earnings are high on the state and public school employees pension funds, the state takes part of those earnings and distributes them to the retirees. This is on top of their regular pensions and COLA increases. (continued....)
